El Kala

87 kilometers east of Annaba, the city formerly called « the Calle », has long lived off the coral harvest off its coast. The small town was the first French settlement in North Africa. In 1524, Marseille traders who obtained the exclusivity of the exploitation of the coral create in the bay a counter competing with the Genoese and Venetian trading posts.

The visitor will appreciate the walk along the small harbor and through the lively terraces. Every year, in August, the coral is still celebrated which is almost no longer harvested for ecological reasons. Jewelry sellers present works adorned with this coral with rich colors. There are also objects made of briar wood, an old craft of the city.
