M'Zab Valley: Architecture, Community, and Oasis Life
The M’Zab Valley’s fortified settlements, mosque-centred planning, collective institutions, palm groves, water management, and living Ibadi heritage.
The UNESCO property includes El Atteuf, Bou Noura, Ghardaïa, Melika, and Beni Isguen. Each fortified settlement is organised around a mosque and adapted to the valley’s demanding environment.
Built form and social organisation
Compact houses, lanes, walls, markets, cemeteries, and community spaces express principles of privacy, mutual responsibility, and efficient land use. The architecture cannot be separated from the institutions that maintain it.
Water and palm groves
Floodwater management, wells, distribution systems, and cultivated palm groves support oasis life. These systems embody accumulated environmental knowledge and require collective maintenance.
Visitor etiquette
Parts of the valley are conservative living communities. Dress modestly, follow local photography rules, use local guides where requested, and respect restrictions on access to sacred or residential places.
