The Algerian Sahara: Oases and Desert Routes
An editorial route through Algeria’s oases, ksour, dunes, rock landscapes, and long desert memory.

The source pack highlights Bou Saâda, Biskra, Laghouat, Brezina, Taghit, Béni Abbès, Timimoun, the M’Zab Valley, El Oued, Touggourt, El Meniaa, Tassili n’Ajjer, and the Hoggar. These places are different routes, not one interchangeable desert experience.
A landscape of knowledge
Oasis agriculture, palm groves, foggaras, ksour, markets, poetry, music, leatherwork, silverwork, and guiding knowledge reveal how people have adapted to water scarcity, distance, heat, and seasonal movement.
Choose the season and prepare
October to April is generally the most comfortable period for many desert journeys, but temperatures and access vary by region. Confirm permits, transport, guides, communications, water, accommodation, and current safety advice before leaving paved routes.
