Tassili n'Ajjer: Landscape and Prehistoric Art

A combined natural and cultural history of Tassili n’Ajjer, its sandstone geology, changing climate, rock art, biodiversity, and conservation.

Tassili n'Ajjer: Landscape and Prehistoric Art

Erosion has shaped the plateau into forests of rock, arches, canyons, and isolated formations. These landforms create specialised habitats and make route knowledge essential.

Images of environmental change

Paintings and engravings depict wild animals, herding, hunting, ceremonies, and daily life across long periods. They are evidence for both cultural expression and major changes from wetter environments to today’s Sahara.

Living regional knowledge

Kel Ajjer knowledge of routes, water, weather, place names, and oral history remains central to meaningful and safe travel. Archaeological interpretation should not erase contemporary communities.

Fragile surfaces

Touching, wetting, tracing, chalking, fire smoke, and graffiti cause irreversible damage. Exact coordinates of vulnerable panels should not be circulated casually.
