Five settlements, one valley
The pentapolis developed from the eleventh century through communities that combined defensive siting, mosque-centred planning, domestic privacy, market life, and collective institutions. Palm groves and cemeteries extend the cultural landscape beyond the walls.
Architecture, water, and community
Houses, streets, wells, floodwater systems, and gardens express adaptation to climate and social organisation. The valley’s heritage remains meaningful because these systems are maintained and used.
