Currency
The Algerian dinar (DZD) is the legal currency for everyday purchases.
Cash remains important
Cards are not universally accepted, especially outside major hotels and businesses.
Exchange legally
Use banks and authorised exchange channels and retain receipts.

Cash and cards

Carry enough dinars for transport, small restaurants, markets, tips, and rural services. International card acceptance is limited and can fail without notice. A card should be treated as a backup rather than the only payment method.

ATMs and banking

ATMs are more common in large cities, but foreign-card acceptance, withdrawal limits, and availability vary. Inform your bank of travel plans, know your PIN, and avoid depending on a single card or machine.

Exchange and rates

Use banks or other authorised channels. The Bank of Algeria publishes official exchange information; the practical rate available to a visitor may include fees. Avoid informal exchange, which can expose travellers to legal and fraud risks.

Budgeting

Prices vary greatly by city, accommodation standard, season, and whether remote transport or guides are included. Request written inclusions from operators and keep receipts for major services.

Verify Before You Travel

Travel requirements can change without notice. Verify current information directly with the nearest Algerian embassy or consulate before making travel arrangements.
